The US model (in my opinion) will most likely be powered by the 1.5-liter 103 bhp ZY-VE MZR engine. An interesting question--especially given that the Mazda2 uses the same platform as the current Ford Fiesta--is whether Mazda will use Ford's new dry-clutch version of the "Powershift" six-speed dual-clutch transmission on the US-market Mazda2, or will they decide to go with a CVT like what we see in the JDM Mazda Demio (as the Mazda2 is known in Japan). Details of models to be sold and possible prices were not announced but will be out in due course. Currently only 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol, as well as 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre turbo diesel engines are available depending on various markets. Japan calls it the Demio but it looks as though North America will stay with the name Mazda2. In the meantime potential buyers and other interested parties will be able to view the Mazda2 at the 2009 LA Auto Show. For whatever reason, I can't help but thinking the Mazda2 design as over rated. Yeah, it is cool and all, it's got a sexy, curvy profile, but... its front is kind of bland when compared to other Mazdas, and its overall concept is sporty, current and fresh, but nothing spectacular. Despite being a almost some sort of Mazda enthusiast (the 3 and the 6 are simply awesome), I do have to admit that the Fiesta is better looking in every angle, with more original lines and a better interior. The Mazda2 1.3 Tamura special edition can be ordered in either three-door or five-door guise and is based off the TS2 trim level. A sport styling package that includes new front and rear bumpers, a two-bar grille, side skirts and rear spoiler is the model's biggest change but the company also threw in unique 16-inch dark grey wheels which help to make the special edition standout.
Under the hood is a 1.3-liter petrol engine that produces 86PS, it is connected to a five-speed manual and this combination allows the model to achieve 54.3mpg in the combined cycle. Prices start at £10,275 for the three-door and £10,775 for the five-door effectively making the styling package a £397 option.
